STUDENT INFO (Q&A/FAQ)

How will Upward Bound help me get into college?
Your UB Counselor will guide you through a series of activities designed to help you acknowledge your academic, personal and career strengths. You will have many opportunities to visit colleges: small, large; urban, suburban, rural; private, public; 2-year, 4-year. These visits will help you explore where you feel most comfortable. And, during your junior and senior years you will be guided through the application process not only for college admission, but also for scholarships and financial aid.

Do I have to participate in both the Summer and Academic Year activities?
Yes. All UBers must complete at least 4 weeks of the summer program each academic year. During the school year you are expected to meet regularly (once every week) in the UB office with the counselor. In addition, you will attend activities. These activities may include visiting colleges, participating in workshops, providing community outreach, attending plays, sporting events, or other cultural events.

Is Upward Bound only for one summer?
UB is a year-round program. As students head into their senior year of high school, we realize that getting a summer job becomes important. So, we help our rising seniors by placing them in career internships while at UB. These internships not only give the students valuable experiences in a field for which they have expressed interest, but they also earn a considerable stipend (that's money with a capital $)! So, in essence, they can have their cake (UB Summer Program) and eat it, too (summer job).

What if my family and I have other plans for the summer?
Many of our participants have other commitments during the summer. The Summer Program lasts six weeks. It starts in late June and finishes at the end of the first week in August. This schedule leaves an entire month for other summer activities such as working a full-time job or spending time with family and friends outside of Upward Bound. In addition, our participants occasionally participate in sports camps or family events, which takes them away from the program for a few days to a week. We can always make accommodations for these absences.

Can I work while attending the UB Summer Program?
The summer program runs from Monday through Friday 9-3. You are more than welcome to work on the weekends during the 6-week program.
